ESSENTIAL BASIC SKILLS

I've been drawing lately with the intention of printing the image as a linocut and this has reminded me of the importance of the basics - those essential drawing skills. When we are 'cutting' we have to have a clear intention about the purpose of every line - what shape does it describe? Are we creating a light or dark. Reminding ourselves of the essential skills of drawing will help.

Negative space is crucial. You want to be looking for the shapes around the form but also light and shadow shapes within the form. Whether that shape is then light or dark can have an impact on your finished print. A 'light' negative space will define the shape of your subject/object if that has been left dark or vice versa.
A negative space around the eyeball will determine what direction the eye is looking and so on. Every shape counts.

Light logic Shadows are caused by light hitting the form. Where it falls directly there will be light (a highlight), as the form turns away from the light less light will reach it and so it gets darker. When drawing a portrait the face has a skull underneath it. This is what gives the face structure. When light hits the skull the shape underneath the skin is defined by light and shadow. If you focus on defining the shape exactly as you see it then you are more likely to create a believable face/head structure. Look know at objects around you that are in light - notice how light behaves and how shadows are created. We can learn so much from just looking. Simplify what you see as much as possible, forgetting about mid tones for now but just focusing on what is light and what is dark - how would you describe that shape?

Line is everything with linocutting. Both the contour line describing the edge or the lines or cuts which create light or shadow. The width, length, strength and direction of the line all inform and create the drawing. Each line needs to have a clear intention of purpose.

Sighting proportions - how big or small something is relative to something else is crucial in portraiture if you want to get a likeness.

Letting go of outcome Although this isn't a drawing skill I think it's an essential attitude to cultivate in drawing and particularly if you are printing. If we get too attached to how we think our drawing is going to turn out we are likely going to be disappointed. If we can keep a flexible and open-minded our drawing or print may not be what we thought but it doesn't mean it is bad or worse, it is just different to what we expected. And more often than not, what emerges is stronger.

Experimenting with different media can teach us so much - it might take us out of our comfort zone at first but that will likely be followed by a period of a growth in confidence. Doing something different can also give us feedback - perhaps one of our drawing skills needs fine-tuning - if so, great - practice it rather than judge it!
