Virtual Life Class: Judy Purbeck
Judy Purbeck is an artist who has been teaching life drawing for 10 years. In the Channel 4 programme ‘Virtual Life Class’ she shared some drawing tips and advice.
- Doing some quick 5 minute warm-ups is a must for life drawing. It is the same principle as when you go to the gym or for a run. In drawing you need to wake-up your hand/eye co-ordination.
- Short warm-ups are very different to longer poses where you want to take time to set up your drawing and check relationships by measuring.
- 5-minute poses don’t have to be accurate but should add something about what you are trying to do eg convey information about emotion, or about light…
- Imagine you have x-ray vision - Seeing the spine through the front of the body. The shape of the spine influences the front so you need to consider that.
- Think about where you are sitting/standing and change or experiment with your viewpoint. For example, go to the floor if you always stand and vice versa.
- If you are drawing a pose such as the head in hands type, you still have to draw the whole head even if you can’t see it. If you just draw the hands it does not work.
- Look for shapes between the arms and the body, the head, the neck and shoulders. Always look for the negative shapes.
- Negative space is where the model isn’t and it can be easier to place arms and legs if you focus on where they are not.
- You must look at where parts of the body connect and override what your brain tells you.
- Look for landmarks such as the navel, nipple, fold above hip etc – these all help to show how the body is twisted and where things are in relation to other parts.
- When you are drawing a very foreshortened pose such as lying down, you must look at the shapes of the body in a more abstract way – as a landscape. These are exciting poses to draw but you have to challenge what your brain tells you.
- When drawing a foreshortened pose you really need to look and concentrate on what is really there. But don’t be scared of it – it’s exciting.
- Don’t have a preconceived idea in your mind about what you want your finished drawing to look like. It’s hard to draw to order.
- There is no worse thing you can do in life drawing than say you want to draw like Michelangelo. You need to draw in your own style and you’ll find that emerging the more you do it.
- Consider where and how light is falling on the body. What is in shadow and what is in light? The light and shadow shapes will create the form of the body.
- When you are working tonally, squint around the figure and you will see more clearly the shape of the shadows.
- What do you like in your model? There is always an emotional bond between the artist and the model. Remember that it is difficult for them – they have to concentrate to sit still.
- Don’t ignore the feet. Feet have lots of personality and you could do a portrait of something just by focusing on the feet so they deserve to have as much attention paid to them as the face.
- Finally, If you go to a life drawing class every week you will improve rapidly. If you can draw a figure you can draw anything.
NEXT MONTH
Next month will be the last artist in the series: Gary Hume, who was a Turner Prize nominee and represented Britain in the 1999 Venice Biennale.
