What do people who have done the course already think?
"The course superb in every respect. The venue is idyllic allowing us to completely destress, enjoy excellent much previously undiscovered veggie cuisine in rural calm environs. The course is challenging, imaginative and fulfilling."

Reviewing the Past Year

As 2012 draws to a close it’s an opportunity to look back over the last 12 months at what you have achieved and look forward to 2013 with some specific goals or directions you’d like to head towards. Too often we finish a drawing or piece of work and move straight on to the next one. Our critical mind is never satisfied so it’s easy to lose sight of what progress we actually have made over a period of time. This is why I highly recommend you always date your work – even if it’s just a small note on the reverse – and you keep it. Even if you are not happy with it at least keep it for a period of time as a benchmark for other pieces you do.
  • Gather together any pieces of work you’ve done in the last 12 months (or whatever period you choose) and organise them in date order. Go through them with an open mind. For now just noticing what it is you like about specific pieces – perhaps it’s just a small area you are pleased with, maybe it’s the use of colour or the way you composed the image; be generous and kind to your artist self!
  • Notice any times when you did something out of your comfort zone and acknowledge it. Perhaps you experimented with a different medium, or you tackled a new or difficult subject matter, maybe you attended a class or joined an online group. We are only ever going to grow in confidence and skills when we try something new. If we are constantly doing the same thing over and over you work is going to stagnate and become stale. Yes it is scary doing something new – and yes you may feel you are going backwards at first but in the longer term you and your work will benefit hugely from experimenting from time to time with doing something differently. Often doing something in a new medium will influence how we draw or paint usually.
  • Now look at your work and notice how it is has changed over the period you are reviewing. Notice any improvement in execution, notice any changes in attitudes. If you were looking at a friend’s work what would you be saying to them now?
  • What would you like to do in 2013? Reflecting on the direction we would like to head in can be really helpful. If you feel you need some help with improving your skills perhaps you could join a class or online group. If you think your work is feeling stale what do you think you could change to make it exciting for you again? If finding a local class is too difficult for you have a look online. There are many different groups available through art forums and image browser groups like Flickr. Maybe experimenting with a different medium – if you usually draw how about trying some paint? Perhaps it’s visiting more art galleries to look at works of art – they are always so much better in reality than in reproductions, maybe it’s visiting an exhibition of an artist whose work you’d normally not be drawn to. Do something different and you may be surprised.
  • Don’t be over ambitious with goals. They can set us up for feeling a failure if we don’t achieve them. There is no point in saying you are going to draw every day if your lifestyle is never going to allow that. However perhaps you could put together a few drawing tools and have them to hand so you can make the most of odd pockets of time. Perhaps you could jot some ideas down so in a month or so when you are thinking what can I do this weekend, you can have a look at the list and pick something on it. Keep it simple and make it as easy as possible for yourself.
If you want your drawing to improve you have to draw. It’s quite simple. So your challenge is how to make your drawings happen. Good luck!
