Virtual Life Class: Gary Hume

This is the last article in this series from the Channel 4 programme ‘Virtual Life Class’ - a wealth of inspiration and advice about life drawing from experienced artist and teachers. This month is the turn of Gary Hume, who has been a Turner Prize nominee and represented Great Britain in the 1999 Venice Biennale.
  • You need to be relaxed when you draw - therefore it's useful to start with rubbish paper so you are not too attached to outcome.
  • Use your hands to create a 'viewfinder' which allows you to 'crop' the image (like looking through a camera). You want to look for negative spaces around and between the body. The surrounding space is just as important as the model.
  • We all have a lot of preconceived ideas about the nude, therefore if you want to learn you really need to look. Rather than drawing a hand, draw where the hand meets the hip (or wherever it is).
  • You are not taking a photograph. In a drawing you are making another thing - it's not her/him - the model. But it is your drawing. Make mistakes... don't be afraid. There is no drawing police who will come and tell you it's all wrong.
  • You don't know what you are looking at. If you do you will get it all wrong all the time. You need to believe what you are seeing even if your brain tells you differently.
  • The position in which you draw is important. Drawing is a physical and mental act. If you are standing you are more engaged.
  • All the time while drawing you need to be asking yourself 'what is in line with this curve? Seeing what connects to what...seeing how far a line goes. If you do this - and you need to be constantly checking - you will finally be right. The pleasure is in looking and trying to follow.
  • With life drawing the pose will change and you just have to learn to live with it. You have to respect the model's need to move and breathe. Nothing in nature stays still.
  • You can only learn from things that go wrong. You have to be embarrassed to do it in the first place.
  • Life drawing is called a practice. To look and transcribe what you see takes practice so be kind to yourself when you are doing it.
  • If you get lost, just stop and breathe and start again. Even if it's wrong, for the sake of getting on with it, trust a bad marke and take it as right and see if you can find it later.
  • If it's not working, continue with it until it dies and then make another... always keep going...

Don't Miss... London Exhibitions in 2010

Two exhbitions on drawing are opening in London in the first part of 2010 that you won't want to miss.

THE REAL VAN GOGH: THE ARTIST AND HIS LETTERS
23 January to 18th April 2010 at the Royal Academy, London.
This will be the largest Van Gogh exhibition since 1968 and apparently will give the lie to the idea that the painter was a "reckless and unreflective genius".

Over 35 of the surviving 902 letters that he wrote will go on display beside 65 paintings and 30 drawings, the works of art express the principal themes of the correspondence. Much of this is rarely on display due to its fragile nature. Van Gogh only learned to draw in the last 10 years of his life and his letters to his brother Theo describe his progress and struggles.

FRA ANGELICO TO LEONARDO: RENAISSANCE DRAWINGS
22 April to 25 July 2010 at the British Museum, London
This exhibition is a unique collaboration between the Uffizi in Florence and the British Museum.

Over 100 exquisite drawings by Italian Renaissance artists including Raphael, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Verrocchio among others will be on show. A rare opportunity indeed to see drawings from two major collections.

"This exhibition is a unique opportunity to discover the evolution of drawing which laid the foundations of the High Renaissance style of Michelangelo and Raphael."
