5 Attitudes to Improve your Drawing June 23, 2024 |
Hello, It's been a busy Spring with several 5-day workshops and the first of the 2-day follow-on workshops. Registration is now open for workshops in the autumn. I am offering two options - one for people new to Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and another for those of you who have worked with me before.
5-day Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workshop 2-day Follow-on Workshop Both workshops will be held in Scotland and are residential. This gives you the opportunity to relax and recharge in beautiful surroundings on the shores of Loch Goil (just over an hour from Glasgow Airport or 2.5 hours from Edinburgh airport).
A couple of people have mentioned that my emails have gone into their spam folder so if you email me but don't hear back please check your junk
folder. If you are having problems you can always use anna.black@btinternet.com.
5 Attitudes to Improve your Drawing1. Let go of outcome – focus on process. The more you can be present and not worry about whether your drawing is good or looks like xyz the better it will be – and more enjoyable for you!2. Curiosity – Being curious while drawing activates the ‘approach’ mode of your brain. This mode of thinking is open and engaged and far more helpful than the ‘avoidance’ mode of thinking which is what we are in when we are frustrated and negative about our drawing. Rather than 'I can't do this', ask yourself, 'What if I try this?'
3. Patience – Learning a new skill as an adult is hard! You’ve probably spent a lifetime focusing on what you are good at so it can feel uncomfortable learning something new. It takes time to practice skills and get comfortable with them so be patient with yourself.
4. Trust in the process – the 5-day workshop has been developed by Dr Betty Edwards and her son, Brian Bomeisler. It
has been honed over the years and has taught thousands of people to draw. It’s carefully structured to introduce and practise skills – building confidence as well as the skill of drawing.
5. Non-Judging – Constantly judging your progress and your work is counter-productive. All drawings go through what I call ‘an ugly duckling’ stage so it’s important to keep going and work things through rather than give up or start again. Giving yourself a hard time will keep you stuck in an avoidance rather than approach mode of mind.
