Are you up for the challenge? Spring UK DRSB courses open
January 01, 2025

Hello Happy New Year! Is 2025 going to be the year that you finally learn to draw? Learning anything new can be challenging – particularly as an adult. We can feel vulnerable and way out of our comfort zone. As we go through life, generally we focus on the things we do well and being a beginner can feel uncomfortable – that’s why I make it a priority to create a supportive learning environment. It’s worth reminding ourselves that learning = growth. As you overcome fear and doubt and learn a new skill your confidence will increase. Once you realise you can learn to draw – despite maybe thinking your whole life this was impossible – you realise you can do anything if you put your mind to it.

Registration is now open for the 5-day workshop in London at the end of February and Scotland at the end of April.
If you'd like to give yourself yourself the gift of drawing, now's your chance!

THE MOUSE & THE MAZE

Learning to draw is as much about mindset. The more we can approach it with curiosity and interest rather than fear and anxiety the easier you will find it.

In an experiment a group of college students were split into two groups. Their creativity was measured beforehand and found to be evenly divided across the group.

Both groups were given a cartoon puzzle maze to complete. At the start of the maze was a cartoon mouse and depending on the group, at the maze’s exit the cartoon mouse either had a piece of cheese or an owl hovering at the side.

Both groups took the same amount of time to complete the puzzle but what was interesting were the after effects.

The participants fleeing the imaginary owl submitted scores that were 50% lower on creativity. This shows that by attending to the owl the students in that grouped were more cautious, more vigilant to things going wrong and were more avoidant.

So by actively assuming an approach mode of mind rather than an avoidant we are encouraging activation of the left-side of the pre-frontal cortex (the area of the brain that helps us manage difficult emotions) and at the same time encouraging creative thinking. Those who employ an approach mindset are individuals who move towards events in their lives that create meaning and pleasure and this in turn enables them to move towards any distressing events with a sense of equanimity.

You can cultivate an approach mode of mind by being curious, interested and non-judgmental. These are great attitudes to bring to the workshop.

Instead of telling yourself ‘I can’t do this’ or ‘I’m rubbish’, remind yourself that ‘I’m learning how to do this’. Learning anything is a process and if you focus on enjoying the process rather than outcome you’ll see the rewards. I hope you’ll join me and discover that for yourself.
