My favourite drawing tool January 18, 2025 |
Hello I hope you are enjoying your weekend. Every exercise on the 5-day Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain workshop has a learning point and/or elements to teach the skill of drawing, or strategies to switch off or calm down judging L-mode and cultivate R-mode. One of those is using an eraser - my favourite drawing tool. Discover why below. As well as learning how to draw you'll take home the Portfolio of materials which includes unique drawing tools developed by DRSB Inc based on those used by the Old Masters. Registration is now open for the 5-day workshop in London at the end of February and Scotland at the end of April. Places are filling up so If you'd like to give yourself the gift of drawing, don't miss your chance.

My Favourite Drawing ToolI love erasers. They come in a multitude of types – white plastic (can be cut into shapes to create sharp points and edges for clean lines), a pencil eraser which can be sharpened for fine detail, kneadable or putty rubbers (my favourite) and ‘end of pencil’ for texture and mark-making. You can also get mechanical eraser pencils of different shapes and widths. In your Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain portfolio (which is yours to keep) you will get four different types of erasers to experiment with. Drawing with an eraser is a revelation for many students. You will start learning about - and using - light and shadow on day 2. You will learn how to lay a ground of graphite and then erase out the light. There’s something about drawing with an eraser that bypasses that critical, judging mind that often sabotages a drawing. We can get nuances of light and shade that describe a form and create a particular mood. When we focus on
erasing out we are concentrating on big shapes of light - just looking and erasing out patterns - a great way to cultivate R-Mode. The drawing emerges like magic! Although some people have been taught that erasing is bad they quickly discover that the skill of drawing is about to learning to see. The more you look, the more you notice. You then need to erase and adjust marks as you clarify your drawing and rub out what you no longer need. Erasing out is not a mistake but an indication that you are seeing more clearly.
