How to Quieten Your Inner Critic
September 15, 2024

Hello, I hope you are having a good weekend.

The course in London in November is now full but contact me if you'd like to go on a waiting list. Due to a cancellation I have one place left for Scotland in October (unless you are a couple sharing a room in which case 2!)

In Scotland, I am offering two options - one for people new to Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain and another for those of you who have worked with me before.

5-day Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain Workshop

2-day Follow-on Workshop

Both the Scotland workshops are residential. This gives you the opportunity to relax and recharge in beautiful surroundings on the shores of Loch Goil (just over an hour from Glasgow Airport or 2.5 hours from Edinburgh airport).

Does your inner critic get in the way of learning how to draw, . find out how you can silence it!

A couple of people have mentioned that my emails have gone into their spam folder so if you email me but don't hear back please check your junk folder. If you are having problems you can always use anna.black@btinternet.com.

How to Silence Your Inner Critic

The inner critic is often the biggest obstacle to learning to draw. On the Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain course we look at specific strategies to silence it. Here are some suggestions to try, which include contributions from past participants:
  • Focus on the space around your subject/object, and particularly where their shared edges. Draw the empty space and shapes rather than the object itself.
  • Draw upside down so you don’t know what it is your drawing.
  • Play music while you draw (I prefer music without lyrics which can be a distraction).
  • Focus on the process rather than the end result. Concentrate on this line or mark , moving your drawing tool very slowly as you look.
  • Experiment with a different medium or drawing tool – being a ‘beginner’ gives you the freedom to play.
  • Date your drawings and take them out from time to time and look through them in an open-hearted reflective way. You will probably be surprised at how much you have improved. Even drawings that you think are no good will probably have some elements that are interesting to your or areas of learning.
  • Remind yourself it’s only a drawing. We learn through exploring and pushing boundaries and that includes learning a new skill as an adult which is bound to feel uncomfortable at times.
Every drawing goes through an ‘ugly duckling’ stage when it looks nothing like what you might expect. This is normal. Just keep going and don’t give into the critical voice. Every drawing is an exploration of learning.

5-day Workshop

In each 5-day workshop you will get:
  • 5 days of drawing
  • 35 hours of teaching
  • includes portfolio of drawing materials and unique Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain® tools to support your drawing (RSP £115)
  • Supportive and encouraging learning environment
