Discover your unique line style - learn to draw in 5 days
February 08, 2025

Hello
I hope you are enjoying your weekend. It's not too late to join us at the end of the month in central London. Although learning to draw can feel scary, in a small group you will learn the skill of drawing in just 5 days - plus strategies to switch off or calm down judging L-mode and cultivate R-mode.

As well as learning how to draw you'll take home the Portfolio of materials which includes unique drawing tools developed by DRSB Inc based on those used by the Old Masters.

You can still join us for the 5-day workshop in London at the end of February and Scotland at the end of April. If you'd like to give yourself your the gift of drawing, don't miss your chance.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

A sneak peek behind the scenes of a 5-day workshop - over the 5 days you will learn the skills listed below. Find out what goes on in a 5-day workshop

DISCOVER YOUR LINE STYLE

When you are drawing it’s very easy to get so caught up in trying to render what you see in terms of angles and proportions that you forget about the power of line. If you look at drawings done by the Old Masters and other artists, the line of the pencil is in constant movement and change – thick, thin, light, dark, solid, broken, repetitive…All of this contributes to perspective, sense of movement, energy and much more.

Some artists create light and dark with cross-hatching, others like Van Gogh will have a wide vocabulary of marks to render tone. If you think of line as the language of a drawing, you want that language to speak volumes – to convey mood and evoke emotion as well as describe the subject.

One of the benefits of learning to draw in a group is that you will quickly see how each person has a distinct line style – that contributes to make your work uniquely yours.

Practice the marks you make on paper

  • Vary the pressure on the pencil – what do you notice?
  • Experiment with how you hold your pencil – what do you notice if you hold it close down to the tip? How about if you hold it higher up towards the end? How does the position of the fingers affect the mark made?
  • Experiment with drawing the same object in a variety of different pencil styles. Notice how a particular style of mark may convey a particular feeling tone to the drawing.
  • Experiment with different types of drawing tools – different grades of pencil, biro, ink pen, charcoal – each one will create a different type of mark.

Each of us has our own style of making a mark with pencil but that doesn’t mean you can’t explore and extend the range of marks you can make. When you increase your vocabulary of marks it will empower you to make conscious deliberate decisions when you are drawing to use a particular type of pencil mark to convey particular information.

Discover your unique style when you take the 5-day Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain workshop.

5 BENEFITS OF THE 5-DAY WORKSHOP

Whether you haven’t picked up a pencil since schooldays or perhaps you enjoy drawing or painting but want to be able to draw from observation, the Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain® 5-day workshop will teach you the perceptual skills of drawing – and more. Participants often comment on what they take away – and it might be different things for different people.

1. Learning to see
In order to be able to draw you need to be able to see – to see what is actually there rather than what you think is there…Once you learn to see as an artist sees your world will be transformed - whether you are walking in the woods, taking a photograph, enjoying an art exhibition or drawing!

“This course is about so much more than learning to draw. It's about learning to really see, and the curiosity that evokes.” SF

“ “I'm very proud of my progress…I'd recommend this course to anyone who's interested in drawing and arts or just simply wants to have fun and see the world in a new light." .” Palma B

“ “I love this feeling of freedom and potential the course has given me, and a new way of seeing the world.” .” CF

2. Opening up possibilities
Often when people realise that they can actually draw, it makes them wonder what else might be possible for them. So often we stop ourselves doing something new because we tell ourself a particular story about it – usually something negative!

“ “what I really loved about the course was the gateway it opens up the other possibilities.”

“ “As a deeper benefit of doing the course I currently feel more unlocked to ‘just do it’ in various areas of my life” .” RS

3. Increasing confidence
The course will give you the foundational skills of drawing which you can then enjoy developing and taking in a multitude of directions.

“ “…how dramatically it [the course] improved my confidence and increased my pleasure in drawing” .” Katie N

4. A structured, supported way of learning
The course is structured to introduce you to the 5 skills of drawing and give you plenty of opportunity to practice them – as well as give you strategies for choosing which mode of mind you want to be in. You will learn in a calm, supportive environment – benefiting from teacher support as well as others in the group.

“ “It was hard to believe what I had previously read about the benefits achievable from following the methods taught in the drawing exercises, but it really is working for me.” .” RS

“ “It seems that I have finally found a method of learning which works” .” KE

“ “… your course helped me reset my brain to be patient, enjoy the process and be content on learning. I doubt I would have got as far as I did trying to learn on my own.” .” RM

5. Increased focus and calm
When we are in the ‘zone’, time falls away and we are simply present. This state of flow is calm, focused and confident.

“ “I felt my brain switch into this new and different mode. The anxious and insistent need to keep “doing stuff” disappeared, to be replaced by a calm and focus I had not experienced before.” .” CF

“ “Thank you for a splendid week. I've waited 13 years to do this course and it was worth the wait!” .”
